About Northwest Missouri State University

Northwest Missouri State University, or NMSU for short, is a state university in Maryville, which is the county seat of Nodaway County, situated in the US state of Missouri, with a population estimated at a number of more than 10 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. NMSU was founded in 1905, first starting as a teachers college, and it gained university status and adopted its current name in August, 1972.


Currently, the university has an enrollment of more than 6000 students and offers numerous educational programs in various fields of study, including ''undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the fields that prepare students for careers in a global marketplace, and for laying the foundation for lifelong learning''.


Athletics

NMSU's athletic teams are known as the Northwest Missouri Bearcats, who compete in NCAA Division II, since 1957, in various sports, for both men and women, including in football, in which they won 3 NCAA Division II national title games, and had 7 NCAA Division II vappearances, men's basketball, in which they appeared in one national title and two Elite 8 title games, and women's basketball, in which they also experienced success many times, in the past years.


The distinctive colors of the Bearcats are hunter green, black and white, and their mascot is Bobby the Bearcat.


Notable Alumni

Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable NMSU alumni, there are: Jean Jennings Bartik - among the first programmers of the ENIAC and inductee into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame, Steve King - Congressman from Iowa's 5th District, Mel Tjeerdsma - Northwest's national champion winning coach, and most winning DII post-season coach with 22 victories, and Gary Gaetti - Major league baseball player, among few others.
